Musical Alphabet: G

Goldfrapp are one of those bands who change style with every album, while retaining a distinctive identity.

To wit: Utopia, from the first album Felt Mountain.

Strict Machine (love the video) from the second album Black Cherry.

(and if you thought that was sexy, check out Twist…). Their third album Supernature, was more of a Studio 54, disco and coke type thing, and I gave it a miss. And then they went all pastoral and folky with their most recent album, Seventh Tree.

So which Goldfrapp do you prefer?

They’re all good, but I do love that Strict Machine video. It’s hard to tell that the third video is even the same band.

To be fair you could probably do this with a lot of bands, selecting wildly different songs even from individual albums. Seventh Tree also has tracks that would sound just as much at home on Felt Mountain or Black Cherry, and vice versa.

I was always a huge fan of their first album, just after i bought it i was on a business trip in the byron bay region (those were the good old days) and i played it obsessively in the car trips i did in the week i was there… listening to it now still brings back vivid memories of driving down country roads… the last album’s not bad either, and i do like their disco phase, but the first gets my vote..

If pushed I’d have to say that Felt Mountain’s my favourite too.
